About Betas

What is a beta?
A beta reader previews a story and provides critical and constructive feedback to help the author improve the story before it is posted.  A beta reader can catch misspelled or misused words, point out confusing passages of text, critique the plot, question the timeline, tweak the characterization, or any combination of the above. Each author should tell his or her beta how detailed the beta-comments should be -- anything from taking a very rough draft and helping the author shape trouble sections, to a last-minute spellcheck before posting.

Who can be a beta reader?
Just about anyone. A beta reader doesn't necessarily have to be a writer, but they should have a good grasp of the mechanics of writing, especially spelling, grammar, pacing, and plotting. A good beta should also have a pretty firm grasp of show canon and characterization.

Do I need to use a beta?
Yes. Though the decision is, of course, up to each individual author. Most authors agree, however, that every story can benefit from another pair of eyes -- even the best authors make mistakes. Beta readers can do anything from catch a spelling error to tighten up characterization.
